KREUTZ CREEK VALLEY LIBRARY CENTER FAIR IS BIG SUCCESS!

The Weatherman predicted rain, and he was right!  At 10:30 AM, the heavens opened up and the rain came down along with the thunder.  Despite that, the Library Friends Branch Support Group was most pleased with the turnout of people and the financial results. As Betty Bell reported “this was the best ever!”

We are most grateful to all those who worked so hard and long, as preparations for this affair began well in advance. We are most appreciative to all those who contributed in any way as well as all the folks who came out to purchase the items we had to offer.

Thank You to Hellam Township for providing space for the book sale. Thank You to Eastern High School’s Library Club and Librarian Jessica Crone for their help in organizing the books for the sale.

Thank You to Friends Branch Support Group members: Elizabeth McKonly, Gail Sullivan, and Mike Freedman (Vice President) who spent Friday preparing for the sale and spent Saturday assisting patrons with their selections. Thank you to Kurt Woerpel for the loan of his trailer and for helping with set-up and take-down. It is estimated that well over 350 people were served. Best sellers were children’s books, fiction, and cookbooks.

The Bake Sale was held in the Library.  Co-chairpersons (and Knitters) Mary Jo Dannels and Linda Warner report that the whoopee pies, fudge, and brownies were the biggest sellers as those were sold out in minutes after opening. They estimate having about 300 customers.

Barb Lefever, an avid gardener, created a large number of flower and herb baskets, as she had prepared these well in advanced of the sale. You will still be able to purchase these items throughout the summer while supplies last.

Betty Bell, Friends member and past president of Friends, was responsible for selling space to individuals for their Flea Markets and running the Yard Sale.

The Girl Scouts presented a story time in the library for the youngsters and had the kids create sand art. Balloon Artist, Chris Palmer, was on hand to offer his creations to the kids, big and little.  Indeed, there was something for everyone including the opportunity to receive a massage by Mark Schmoel!

Hot Food and drinks were available for purchase under the direction of Dave Eisenbeil.  Unfortunately, many of the outside activities had to be curtailed once the rains began and continued throughout the day.

Many of our patrons also made financial donations for which we are most grateful. Over $2,000 was raised for the library!

So despite the weather, Kreutz Creek Valley Library Center’s Library Fair was successful.

President's Message

By: Kurt Woerpel

Feeling rather philosophical as I sit here listening to “Celtic Women” a CD album of Irish Soprano’s I ask why is there air?

Bill Cosby once addressed this issue while referring to a girl he was dating in college. He remarked that she and some of her brilliant friends would walk around campus asking themselves questions, like why is there air? Bill Cosby a Phys Ed major at Temple University couldn’t quite understand this as he said “every Phys Ed major knows air is there to fill basketballs, footballs, soccer balls etc."

What Bill Cosby forgot or didn’t think about was those inflatable sports items were for exercising the body, while his female friend was exercising the mind.

Gyms or fitness centers provide tools for exercising such as weights or machines, where we add weight or resistance to keep the body developing and increasing its capacity.

Libraries provide the tools to help one exercise the mind. Yes, there are books that address body exercise, however, the bulk of the libraries materials are for the mind. In case you think I am rambling, (I hope I’m not) I think it is really all related.

Most libraries have a children’s section with many highly illustrated books. Some writers like Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr Seuss) limited the number of words like in Green eggs and Ham (50 words) and silly rhymes and rhythms that stick in your head for decades. If you are smiling now, it is because you remember. If not, you may be the Grinch.

As you progress through the children’s section the illustrations become less the focal point and words take up more of the page. We move from simple thoughts to more complex stories and series. Harry Potter being the latter sample. But some of you may remember the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew better. This change from illustration to words is like adding weight or resistance. We no longer need an illustration of Curious George jumping over a barrel, but the written word replaces the illustration and our minds make their own illustration or pictures. Our minds are now doing the work that years before it was unable to do.

As we continue to mature through formal schooling and then in our work life our reading changes from the more basic entertainment to conveying knowledge of things that happened in the past (history), advancing through training in social, mathematical and earth sciences, with increasing complexity. These needs are usually met through educational institution libraries and the Internet.

We reach a point where we return to reading for entertainment. This is commonly referred to as the adult section here at KCVL. The type of materials can be history, sciences, biographies or fiction.

On the surface it might be thought that we moved in a circle. Yes, however in an infinite growing larger circle. Look back at the illustration. See the growth including side paths and know all the while our libraries have been here to help us exercise our minds.

So, why is there air?

Please feel free to email me at KCPresident@comcast.net.

Best regards,
Kurt

Programming and Volunteer Needs

Library Volunteers Needed

The library is looking for several volunteers to fill the following time slots:

Tues. 4-6, Thurs. 2-4 or 4-6. Saturday 10-1 (on an alternating basis), plus someone who is flexible to substitute when another volunteer cannot be there. Besides having the opportunity to meet other people and to utilize your skills, volunteers receive other perks, such as free video rental, no late fees, etc. Volunteers should be at least 14 years old. Volunteers over 18 are required by law to undergo a background check that costs $20. A receipt for this expense may be submitted to the KC Friends support Group for reimbursement. If you are interested, please contact the circulation desk or call 252 4080.

Ebay Seller Needed

The library is looking for someone to sell some of the special books that are donated to the library on Ebay. The staff will sift through the donated material and select what might be valuable. The volunteer would then post these items on Ebay and oversee the auction. Profit from the sales benefit the library. For more information or to express interest, please contact the library at 252 4080.

Scrapbook/Historian Needed

The library is looking for someone with an interest in scrapbooking to organize news articles and photographs documenting the 28-year history of the library. All the needed materials will be provided by the library. If interested, please contact the library at 252 4080.

Check Out Pictures of Items For Sale at the Library

Our new website has pictures of the many items that the Friends have for sale at the library in order to help meet our 2008 goal of $30,000 to support the library. Many items make great gifts. They can be purchased by asking someone the circulation desk to assist you.

Used Printer Cartridges and Cell Phones

Please continue to donate used printer cartridges and old cell phones to the library. For each printer cartridge and cell phone that is donated to the library, the library receives a donation and the item is recycled! This is a win-win situation for everyone! Thank you for your support!
